Our inspiration and purpose

Guinean Women of Upstate New York (G-WOUNY) was inspired by a deep desire to unite Guinean women, strengthen our community, preserve our rich culture, and build a powerful support system. We aim to create a space where women can connect, grow, and uplift one another.

Our main purpose is to foster a strong and united community where every woman feels supported and empowered. We achieve this through diverse opportunities, including educational initiatives, vibrant cultural activities, mentorship programs, community service, and meaningful humanitarian initiatives.

How we support our community

Guinean Women of Upstate New York supports women and families by fostering a strong network built on unity, cultural celebration, education, empowerment, and dedicated community service.

Our activities span cultural gatherings that honor Guinean heritage, informative educational workshops, valuable mentorship and networking opportunities, and essential support for women and families during challenging times. We also host community events that bring people together and organize humanitarian initiatives to assist underserved families both locally in Upstate New York and in Guinea.

Our guiding principles

The core principles that guide Guinean Women of Upstate New York (G-WOUNY) are unity, respect, empowerment, compassion, cultural pride, and dedicated service. We are committed to ensuring every woman feels welcomed, valued, and genuinely supported within our community.

We believe in mutual respect, collaborative efforts, shared knowledge, and unwavering support for one another through all of life's challenges and triumphs. We also strive to preserve and celebrate Guinean culture while embracing the rich diversity of the wider community. Our commitment extends to giving back, aiding families in need, empowering women through education and opportunity, and inspiring the next generation.

"The greatest achievement is not simply what we have done, but the commitment to empowering women, strengthening families, and building bridges between communities."

Aissatou Diallo, former president of Guinean Women of Upstate New York
